Hepatitis A virus primarily affects adolescents and adults, often manifesting as acute hepatitis with notable jaundice, a symptom of concern requiring prompt treatment. This disease spreads through fecal-oral transmission, particularly through contaminated food or water. Infected individuals can shed the virus in their feces, leading to widespread outbreaks.
Symptoms of hepatitis A infection include fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, right upper abdominal discomfort, dark urine, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes).
Individuals who have previously been infected with hepatitis A develop lifelong immunity and will not contract the disease again.
Indications in Adults:
-
Individuals at higher risk for hepatitis A include men who have sex with men, drug users, laboratory workers handling hepatitis A virus, and travelers to areas with outbreaks such as Thailand.
-
Food handlers are also at risk of spreading the infection.
-
Individuals with a history of exposure to hepatitis A should receive vaccination within 14 days of exposure.
Vaccination Recommendations:
Intramuscular vaccination is recommended twice, at least 6 months apart. The vaccine's efficacy is over 95% after receiving two doses of inactivated vaccine, both in children (age of 1 year and above) and adults.
Prevention of the disease, apart from vaccination, includes thorough handwashing, especially after using the bathroom or before preparing food, which is crucial in disease prevention.
