Do you know that if you contract rabies, there is a 100% chance of mortality?

Rabies, also known as hydrophobia, is a disease that most people have likely heard of.
In the Thailand statistics of the year 2023, there were 6 reported cases and all resulted in death.
In Thailand, positive reports of rabies in animals were found in 861 cases (11.14% of the total 7,729 samples) from 77 provinces
For tourists who have the possibility of being bitten or licked by animals, the incidence is approximately 1-3 per 100 tourists per month (based on a study conducted in 2010-2011)
Therefore, for anyone with a history of animal contact, whether it be through bites, licking, or exposure to body fluids from open wounds caused by dogs, cats, monkeys, or bats, it is necessary to clean the wound thoroughly. Use soap and water, wash for about 10-15 minutes, try to wash into the wound, and promptly seek medical attention for rabies vaccination (administered in the muscles with a total of 5 injections on days 0, 3, 7, 14, 28), as well as Tetanus vaccination and antibiotics in some cases.
The rabies vaccines available in Chiang Mai Wellness Clinic are Speeda and Verorab.
For those who love animals and engage in activities with animals that pose a risk of rabies, the doctor recommends receiving the vaccine before potential exposure, known as rabies pre-exposure prophylaxis. In the general population, the doctor recommends receiving 2 injections, one week apart. The advantages of this method include not having to receive up to 5 booster shots in the future if bitten or exposed, and avoiding the more painful and expensive intradermal immunoglobulin administration.
